Movie Toy Roundup Part 2 of 4, Web Sling’en
In Movie Toy Roundup Part 1 of 4, we looked at Pirates. Now we take a look at the number 2 contender for 2007 boxoffice champ, Spiderman 3. There are a few standout toys from the latest Spider-Man installment. I found three that are both innovative and promote constructive activities.
The first toy that caught my attention is the Spider-Man 3 My 1st from Hasbro. This is basically an action figure that has two webs, that more closely resemble discs, that shoot out from Spidy’s hands. The brilliance behind this toy is that it is an action figure that is meant for the 3 year old crowd. The problem with almost ALL action figures is that they are meant for older kids because they come with very small parts that can be a choking hazard. Not the case with the Spider-Man 3 My 1st Spider Double Web Shooter. This one gets a thumbs up in my opinion. You can pick up this guy for $20 at Target.
MegaBloks are another standout toy from the new Spiderman movie. For those of us who grew up with Legos, Megabloks were the lame toy that some distant relative gave you for Christmas. Now it looks like MegaBloks have evolved into a pretty amazing line of building sets plus they have licensing deals with major brands. This means that there is a line of (Lego-like) building sets featuring Spiderman. Better still there are sets for ages 3 to 5 AND the 5+ year old crowd. This is a parent’s (or al least mine) dream of branded learning toys. All told there are 4 sets for the 3 to 5 age group and 8 sets for the 5+ age group. The Megabloks sets are priced from $6 to $50 and can be found at any major toy retailer.
Lastly, I really like the Programmable Spider-Man. This toy is pretty amazing looking and I will probably have to go out and buy it to see if it can live up to the product description. The Programmable Spider-Man is a 16” figure that can be programmed via control pad to “move forward, spin around 360 degrees, and fire web projectiles.” Plus your kid can program it to do all kinds of combination moves. I can’t believe this thing can do all this. Given that the new robotic toys cost a fortune and ones like this won’t be out until later this year. Anyway if the Programmable Spider-Man does half of this without breaking it is well worth the $35. You can pick him up at Target.
One puzzling thing about Spiderman 3 is that there seems to be no fast food toy tie in. McDonalds ran with the Turtles a few weeks ago and then sold out to American Idol. Why they didn’t try to go with Spiderman toys in time for the movie’s release I figure out.
All in all there are some pretty nifty toys out for Spidy. We may add more to this list if my son winds up with a must have. He loves Spiderman so I’m sure I will be tripping over some web slingers soon.
